Chris Wiesendanger (Switzerland) - Piano Masterclasses, Aug 7-12

Born 1965, in Zurich Switzerland. He started playing piano
and drums at four. He learned classical music during school time and
began playing improvised music at 14. Founded his own first group and
started to compose music. He cites Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett,
Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Bela Bartok, John Coltrane, Ornette
Coleman, Joni Mitchell and Stevie Wonder as early influences on his
music. From 1996 - 98 he studied in New York at the Julliard School of Music,
piano, composition and musical theory. During that time he was playing
concerts and sessions with many different musicians from New York.
Starts touring with different groups in Switzerland and internationally.
Played at the North Sea Jazz Festival Den Haag, Pori Jazzfestival Finland,
Umbria Jazz Festival Perugia Italy, Saint Petersburg Russia, JVC Jazz
Festival New York.
Currently he is playing with the Trio WWU ( with Christian Weber
and Dieter Ulrich), the Trio WSW (with Daniel Studer and Christian Wolfarth), his New York-based group Urban llage (with Mark Turner, Ben Street and Nasheet Waits) and with the Chris Wiesendanger Nonet Undersong. In 2006 he composed music for the Chinese Dance Company Shen Huei in Hongkong. This production is currently touring in Asia (Singapore, Taiwan and ongkong). He was also invited to teach summerclasses at the Keio University in Tokyo, Japan in 2006.
As a composer, improviser and pianist he is comitted to developing
music which tries to find new musical ways and tries to broaden the
boundaries around his work. The diversity of his many influences are
represented by his different groups. He is interested also in lassical
Indian music, Brazilian music, African Music, popular music forms (which includes producing music), 20th century classical compositions. And he is also fascinated by onnections of music to the visual arts, dance and film.
He is currently teaching at the Musikhochschule HMT Zurich and at the
Musikhochschule MHS Luzern.
