Irish saxophonist Cathal Roche has been commissioned by the Sligo Jazz Project, through the Art's Council of Ireland's Commissions Award, to write a new piece for saxophone sextet featuring Julian Arguelles.
Roche, described by the Improvised Music Company as 'increasingly original' has previously featured as a soloist with the Fuzzylogic Ensemble, RISE saxophone quartet, RTE Vanbrugh String Quartet, ZoiD Ensemble, Kai Big Band and Awkward Silence. As a composer, Roche often incorporates recorded speech into his work, something he picked up from lessons with jazz pianist Jason Moran at the School for Improvisational Music, New York City in 2004. Never one to accept boundaries of genre or instrument he collaborated in 2007 with the Irish composer Ian Wilson and the RTE Vanbrugh String Quartet on 're:play' (2007) an improvisational work which used quarter-tone fingerings on tenor saxophone to better emulate the melodies of speech intonation. He has also built a set of quarter-tone tubular bells for a new speech project with UK drummer Stu Ritchie which is on exhibition at Roscommon Art's Centre until August 23rd.
This year's Sligo Jazz Project will open with a set by the Dublin born RISE Saxophone Quartet who recently supported Thimar at the Helix. (Cathal Roche, soprano; Nick Roth, Alto; Patrice Brun, Tenor; Ian Finlay, Baritone.) For the second set the group will be joined by two guest members, Julian Arguelles, on Tenor, and Matt Halpin, also on tenor. The RISE Saxophone Sextet will play 'Sixtus III' by Cathal Roche at the Factory Performance Space, Sligo on the 5th August.
19 april 2008:
Full Faculty Confirmed:
Its been a tough year so far in the SJP office. With Rufus Reid's great shoes to fill in his absence for double bass masterclasses this year, we have been to-ing and fro-ing from Europe to USA for a successor to Rufus and can now confirm that the final faculty place goes to the Grammy award winning bassist, Todd Coolman (USA). Todd's resume reads like a who's who of jazz, with everyone from Horace Silver to James Moody and Joe Henderson. We are delighted to have secured his services for SJP 2008.
We will have set fees by April 25 at the latest. The delay in this is because we are not sure what the workshop space will cost us. Our plans to run this years project in the Sligo IT fell foul of a lack of available rooms in that establishment and we are currently seeking a suitable space. Fret not, though, we are confident we will have a space confirmed within the week.
The full confirmed faculty is as follows:
Drums: Paul Wertico (USA)
Drums: Steve "Dakiz" Davis (N Ireland)
Double Bass:Todd Coolman (USA)
Electric bass: Reggie Washington (USA-Belgium)
Guitar: Ulf Wakenius (Sweden)
Guitar: Mike Nielsen (Ireland)
Saxophone: Julian Arguelles (UK)
Trumpet: Paul Williamson (Australia)
Piano: Bill Carrothers (USA)
Voice: Anita Wardell (UK)
Jazz Beginners piano & ensembles: Brian Priestley (UK-Ireland)
plus members of the RISE saxophone quartet will take beginners/improvers sax and ensembles.
Looking forward to it!
March: Sligo Jazz Project will announce its 2008 faculty very soon, but in the meanwhile we can say with great delight that Bill Carrothers (USA) will be the 2008 SJP piano maestro and Julian Arguelles (UK) will be the sax man. Reggie Washington will take electric bass and the double bass tutor is the last to be confirmed... exciting news soon!
